Lesson Planning

What to Teach

Sylabussesare available to help catechists to plan and structure lessons for the whole year following the Liturgical Cycle. These guides are prepared for specific age groups and include Church Teaching, Moral Values and development, Prayer, the Sacraments and preparation for receiving them, Mary and her role in the Church, the lives of the Saints, Liturgy, Church History.

To assist catechists in this, the Catechetical Department has produced reflection notes with commentaries on the Sundays and Feasts of Years A, B and C. These notes include points for discussion with youth and adults.

Catechists are urged to meet in their parish groups on a regular basis so as to reflect on the Scriptures and to plan their lessons together. This will help their formation and growth as catechists and make them better able to fulfil their Mission to '...go out to the whole world; proclaim the gospel to all creation...' (Mk 16:15).

Lesson Notes

Lesson Notes are obtainable from the Catechetical Department, and are widely used. These were developed for use in South Africa and are very useful, especially for lessons dealing with First Eucharist preparation, the Mass, a number of Gospel stories, etc. Lessons do not follow the Liturgical Cycle but can easily be picked out and adapted for use as needed.

Catechists are urged to use creatively any catechetical materials which are suitable and to adapt them to their needs, to note the lessons which proved successful and to develop them, sharing their successes with one another. Seemingly failed lessons should not be regarded as such, but rather they should be reflected on, learnt from, improved and tried again.

The Catechetical Department stocks a number of Catechetical Materials
