DIOCESAN EDUCATIONAL TRUST
Catholic Diocese of Johannesburg
Report for the period May 2003 to April 2004 tabled at the meeting of the Board of Trustees held on 11 May 2004.
TRUSTEES
During the year we welcomed Archbishop Tlhagale to the Diocese and the Board. We were saddened by the death of Dave Stewart. Yvonne Gore and Janice Seland resigned. Today we welcome Mark Honeywill in his capacity as the Bishops representative for Education.
The Trust was registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) during the year. The Master has approved the Board and registered the present Trustees.
MEETINGS
The Board met quarterly except that there was no quorum present at the August meeting.
The executive committee has met only as and when necessary.
The proposal to make the Board a working committee with members holding portfolios has not progressed.
PROJECTS
The financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2003 reflected grants totaling R868,810.00.
Immaculata High School administration office and computer room.
The project is nearing completion. It was funded by the De Beers Trust, the School, and the DET and managed by Keith Dowie.
Holy Cross Primary School
The DET funded urgent repairs to the roof of the primary school computer room.
There is still a need to refurbish the roofs of both schools.
St John Berchman-St Martin de Porres Project
The Diocesan Educational Trust supports this as a stand-alone project which is the development of a new High School and the creation of one primary school from the two existing primary schools. The DET contributed R45 000.00 to the upgrading of classrooms and a play area for the primary school.
St Matthew's High School sports field
Most of the funds spent on this project were raised by the appeal to UK schools and donated to the Trust for the purpose. The DET contributed R12,400 to the project.
John Martin
Although the school buildings were completed in the previous year the DET had to meet its obligation of R300,000.00 to the project and contributed a further R87,365.00
FUNDING AND ADMINISTRATION
Fee assistance (Unit bursaries)
Jocasco schools raised R3,500.00. Otherwise there has been no concerted effort to 'market' the unit bursary concept to potential donors. There were three major donors and the entire amount, R161,000.00 distributed. Since the inception of the Unit Bursary scheme fee assistance of R480,000.00 has been given.
Mail appeal
In May 2003 the Diocesan fundraising office mailed 7,000 appeal letters at a cost of R19,000.00 for a return of R51,000.00.
Catholic Schools Sunday
The DET participated in this Diocesan campaign, also in May.
Office
The DET continues to contribute to the running costs of the Diocesan Fundraising office.
We thank the Diocese for the support it offers the Trust.
