DIOCESAN EDUCATIONAL TRUST

Report for the period May 2004 to April 2005
tabled at the meeting of the Board of Trustees held on 10 May 2005.
TRUSTEES
The Office of the Master has finally approved and registered the Trustees. The
registered members are Mr Joe Bantich, Sr Janine Coleman, Mr Grant Gore, Mr John
Mills, Sr Evangelist Quinlan, Mrs Judy Stockill, Sr Biddy-Rose Tiernan and Mr
Themba Tshabalala.
The PBO registration of the Trust is also complete.
The Bishop of Johannesburg is responsible for appointing Trustees.
During the year Sr Cathy O'Gorman resigned on leaving the Diocese.
Mr Grant Gore is on leave of absence from the Board.
Sr Francis Henry resigned on returning to England prior to September 1999.
MEETINGS
The Board met quarterly. The February meeting was held at the Catholic Schools Office in Melrose.
PROJECTS
The financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2004 show an income of less than R500,000 for the year.
- Immaculata High School administration office and computer room
The project has been completed at a cost of R357,000. A project report, including a
financial report, has been given to the De Beers Trust, the main sponsors, who
contributed R220,000.
- Assumpta School
The school has moved its offices and upgraded security.
The Trust allocated R100,000 to the project to upgrade for computers facilities.
- St John Berchman-St Martin de Porres Project
The Diocesan Educational Trust supports this is a stand-alone project which is the
development of a new High School and the creation of one primary school from the two
existing primary schools. The cost of this project is estimated at R6m.
Donations of R820,000 had been received by January 2005. This money is being
invested by the Catholic Diocese of Johannesburg in a special project account.
Support from the GDE in the form of an unused school building is being explored.
FUNDING AND ADMINISTRATION
No fundraising for the Trust has been undertaken this year. The Trust has operated
at a small deficit.
- Bank account
A separate bank account in the name of the Diocesan Educational Trust will be
opened.
- Mail appeal
Because of the delay in registering the Trustees and therefore opening the bank
account no mail appeal was done this year.
- Fee assistance (Unit bursaries)
The Society of Jesus in South Africa contributed R160,000 for fee assistance.
An amount of R5 000 was raised by the debutantes of Holy Rosary School and a
further amount of R2 600 donated by Mr and Mrs D Bostock (regular annual donors).
The full amount has been disbursed among 166 learners in 12 schools.
- Technology Leadership Training
R12,000 was received for this purpose and workshops held at 6 schools.
- Catholic Schools Board
The CSB is represented at meetings of the Diocesan Educational Trust by Mr Mark
Honeywill. Mr Tim McCrindle, the Superintendent for the Diocesan Schools now works
out of the CSB office.
- Office
The DET continues to contribute to the running costs of the Diocesan Fundraising
office.
