Department of Vocations

Your calling in the Catholic Church

Your vocation is a gift of God's love to you. It is unique and special and a vocation which only you can fulfil. God's Holy Spirit will guide you as you, with a ready and open heart, search for and discern God's purpose for your life and make your decision. As you embark on this adventure, remember that you will have the support of our prayers.
What is the life choice to which I am being called?
I feel I am called to minister to the People of God personally, sacramentally and through the Word of God.
I want to give myself completely to one other person and through our love for each other, bring up a family devoted to Christ in His Church.
I am not being called to marriage or consecrated life, how can I realise my vocation?
I know my primary call is to my family, but, at the same time, I also want to minister to people through service, the Word of God and sacramentally.
I feel called to be a priest, but I also want to be a religious. What do I do?
I feel called to live a life of community and prayer, but I also want to serve others in the apostolate.
Where do you live Lord?
Where do you live Lord?
Come and see.
(John 1:38)

With the support of a community, I want to work and pray; to live simply and to strive for conversion.
I feel called to leave the world and to devote my life to prayer in union with Christ and for His Church?
I have already made a life choice, but I still feel called to bring the Word of God to those who do not know Christ.
I want to give my life completely to Christ, but, at the same time, I want to serve in the midst of secular realities.
As a lay person how can I share in the spirit and life of a Religious Institute?
How can I serve Christ and the Church while I continue with my life and career?

The religious priest

The contents of the box does not mean much to a viewer:
It would be more accurate to add, the fact that as a "religious" a priest a=has the support of a genuine community and the religous vows of poverty chastity and obedience to the order/congregation/society.

Vocations Director

Please note that until the Website is updated the following changes have taken place. The Contact details of the Vocations Director are no longer P.O.Box 46 Rivonia or the attached telephone numbers. Please contact the Vocations secretary at the chancery or at jhbvocations@tiscali.co.za. Please also note that the Diocese of Johannesburg will not consider applications for the Diocesan Priesthood unless the applicant is a South African citizen resident in the country for 5 years or the applicant has Permanent Residence status. People living outside South Africa need not apply. We have made a decision to foster Local Vocations for our diocese.Fr Chris

Re: Why don't we function collectively?

I am an active participant (Volunteer) in the Youth Office, I feel that not much is done by the Department of Vocations to influence, or rather helping young people realise their vocations.

As the youth we usually have gatherings such as retreats, workshops, seminars & Conferences & never have I seen even once the Department popping in to give a talk on Vocations. Even if the HOD of the Youth does present all the Youth activities at every HOD meeting.

This could only mean one of two things
1. May be young people are not that important to the Department (Because if you want young peolpe in our Diocese the only link with them is the Youth Office)
2. Or there is no collective working in different departments in our Diocese.

Let's all work in building our Diocese.
