DiscernmentHow will I know?God is still calling young men and women to the priesthood and religious life.
How will you know if you are being called?
Then: You need to discern God's will in your life !"Discernment" means to distinguish, to sort out.So, you listen to what is happening within you, you try to find God's voice and you listen to it as you live your life.
Apply the following three elements:
Believe God Loves YouAccept the truth that God created you in love and continues to love you each day as you are, in your own uniqueness, with your own gifts, strengths and weaknesses.
Perhaps, you think you are ordinary, but that does not lessen the value of
the gifts God has given you.
When God calls, he takes us as we are and uses all we have and are to
achieve his purposes through us. Listen to the SpiritIn the depths of your heart and in all the experiences of your life, the Holy Spirit speaks to you.Do you listen or do you try to ignore God's voice?
Are you not ready to acknowledge that it is God speaking, or do you try to
convince yourself otherwise? Trust what you are hearing in your experience and in your heart.
If you are honest, you will recognise God's call.
You need to be prepared that sometimes others will:
However, if, finally, you are honest in your discernment of God's will in your life, clarity will succeed confusion and determination will overcome temptation and you will experience joy and peace as you move towards a decision.
Respond in TrustIf God's purpose is to be accomplished in your life, you will need to respond in trust to God's call as you have discerned it. This will require your decision to obey God's will and to surrender to it. There will still be times of darkness and struggle, requiring deep faith in God and a continual effort to listen to the Holy Spirit, but God's joy and peace will abide in your heart. In saying "Yes", you believe and trust that God is leading you, even if you do not see the way in its entirety and clearly. You will feel secure in the knowledge that you are following Jesus "the Way. Trusting in God's love you will be prepared to give your life, even while you know the journey to new horizons will be difficult.
Give the process of discernment the time and attention it needs!Should you require help, know that you are always welcome to contact the Vocations Director and/or the Vocations Office. They will also be happy to put you in touch with different orders, congregations and/or secular institutes
