Missionary Life

The Missionary call is a call within a call. Anyone can be called to be a missionary whatever vocation they have chosen. Missionaries can be married or single, priests or religious.

When God calls someone to missionary life, God is calling that person to leave a known and loved environment, known and loved relationships, in order to preach the Good News and build up the Kingdom of God in a strange place and among unknown people.

Missionary work "ad gentes" is work among people who have not heard the Gospel and do not know Jesus Christ. It is primary evangelisation.

Yahweh said to Abram,
'Leave your country,
your family and your
father's house,
for the land I will show you.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you and make your
name so famous that it will
be used as a blessing.'
So Abram went as Yahweh
told him.
Genesis 12:1-4

"New evangelisation" can also be considered missionary work. Here, missionaries work among people who have been baptised, but never catechised. They do not know Jesus Christ, and He and his Gospel make no impact upon their lives.

God sends missionaries to the peoples of the world.
