Report - World Youth Day 2005

ARCHDIOCESE OF JOHANNESBURG YOUTH DEPARTMENT

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011 MADRID, SPAIN

Letter to all Parish Priests, Pastoral Councils and Youth Leaders in the Archdiocese 2009/07/24

WORLD YOUTH DAY MADRID 2011

The dates for the World Youth day in Madrid are 16-21 August 2011 and the theme is "planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith." (Col 2:7) The first word is "planted" but the word used in the bible is "rooted", and as this has other connotations in Australian youth culture so the word has been changed. The website which will be launched is: www.wydmadrid2011.es it is suggested that they should be one "sweater" for t he SACBC Region and for practical reasons this should be organized by one selected Diocese. This should also apply to the National Meeting for Southern Africa. It would be much easier if one Diocese would organize the National Meeting on behalf of the SACBC Youth Office

World Youth Day Pilgrimage Preparations
The next World Youth Day will take place in Madrid, Spain in July 2011. This is a pilgrimage for young people, from all over the world, representing their different dioceses and organisations. This pilgrimage comes every three years. Please note that in such a pilgrimage the young people that parishes send represent the diocese, and thus travel under the banner of the diocese. In the Archdiocese of Johannesburg Youth Office, preparations have already started. We are hoping to have a well coordinated group representing the Archdiocese of Johannesburg. We hereby request the total cooperation from all parishes of our Archdiocese.

At this point in time we request Parishes to start identifying their potential pilgrims for the World Youth Day in Madrid. Their names are to be submitted to the Youth Office at the very latest by November 2010. It is of utmost importance and crucial for parish priests and parishes to realise that we are looking for representatives who will be going on a pilgrimage rather than a tour. This is a spiritual gathering of young Catholics from all over the world who will be praying together with the Pope. It is not a secular gathering of young people. We therefore expect young people who will be willing to use this pilgrimage as time for prayer and spiritual experience with other young people from all over the world. Please ensure that your parish is represented by a young person who fits well under these criteria.

This pilgrimage usually comes with significant financial costs. We therefore encourage parishes to start fundraising for their potential pilgrims who will be going to Madrid, as there will be no fundraising done at deanery levels. Please find attached requirements and guidelines for potential pilgrims to the World Youth Day in 2011. For further information, please contact the Youth Vicar. Please do not use the name of the Archdiocese to register with travel agency until you hear officially from the Archdiocese. At the moment we are asking you to give us the names of possible pilgrims so that we can start working with them, the first meeting will be in February 2010.

Thanking you for your anticipated cooperation
Yours in Christ
Fr Vusi Sokhela
Vicar for Youth

Praying with the Holy Father...

Pilgrimage to Madrid
World youth Day 2011

The Youth office is busy preparing for the up-coming youth pilgrimage to Madrid, which is to take place in August 2011. This is a pilgrimage for young people from all over the world, representing their different dioceses, metropolitans and various organisations. Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, of Johannesburg and Fr Vusi Sokhela, the youth Vicar, strongly advice pilgrims to register via the youth office, as every bishop should come together with his group. Failure to do so could result to the world thinking that the Archdiocese of Johannesburg is not unified, which could result to possibilities of us hosting the next WYD being slim.

Kindly note that in such a pilgrimage, young people that parishes send represent the Archdiocese, so representatives should be of good morals and values, as this is going to be a spiritual journey which we'll be taking with the Pope.
