Sally

Sr Sally Fiore HF What happened to that gifted, young South African tennis player?
Sally Fiore, to the joy of Virginia Wade, had joined the Holy Family Sisters and so probably gave Wimbledon to Wade.

So why did Sally enter religious life? She joined the Holy Family because of her longing to see God known and loved by others, and to see people living in peace, side by side. That was 1964. Now in 2004 we celebrate the gift of her life - lived with zeal, sharing and selflessness, bringing unity to a diversity of peoples.

From the Novitiate in Coronationville, where she, with others, learnt how to be a member of the Holy Family and how the Holy Family was a gift to the world, Sally was launched into teaching, catechising and pastoral ministry.

Apartheid was no obstacle to Sally who befriended anyone and everyone and lived across all the defined "racial barriers". So South Africa found Sally in Coronationville (Johannesburg), Mitchell's Plain (Cape), Elandskop (KwaZulu-Natal), Luckau (Limpopo) and Riverlea (Johannesburg) upholding the dignity of people - rich and poor alike - with a special option for the poor and oppressed. Sally constructed cricket pitches and makeshift tennis courts in some of the places where she served, which pre-empted our sports development programmes. Before going to Uganda, Sally spent some time serving in the Catechetical Department of the Johannesburg Diocese.

Whether famous, well known, ordained, rich or poor, every person was a precious gift of creation. Sally was enthusiastic about life and wanted each person to fulfil his or her potential, which led to her many creative solutions through which all could find the space to know and express their human dignity and equality.

The Holy Family, in its continuing effort to bring the scattered children of God into one big family, responded to a request to establish a new foundation in rural Uganda. Who to send from South Africa was the question?

Sally volunteered and characteristically gave herself over to it whole-heartedly - until she literally ran her final race on the morning of 20 August, 2004. We can only imagine the radiance of her smile when, so suddenly, she must have heard Jesus' final call, "Well done, Sally. Welcome home".
